Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve -
Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH)

Working with wetlands, woodlands, wildlife...... and walkers.

The experience of visiting Caerlaverock Estate is greatly enhanced due to our our working relationship with Scottish Natural Heritage. SNH still adhere to the ethos established by the late Duke of Norfolk who set up the Caerlaverock National Nature reserve on his estate in the 1950s. He was determined that conservation, farming, fishing and wildfowling could co-exist in harmony. Since 1957 when the land that now forms a large part of the nature reserve was leased to SNH, this remarkable vision has been upheld.  Caerlaverock Estate led the way in the sort of integrated sustainable management that we are becoming increasingly familiar with today.

Working closely with our estate manager, our gamekeeper and our farmers, SNH's approach of managing activities for both the conservation and enjoyment of the natural heritage remains key to the continuing success of Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve.
