Farming at Caerlaverock

Farm Produce

Caerlaverock has recently embarked on a new venture which is concentrating on developing a range of home-reared meat, locally smoked salmon and game products for sale in the Caerlaverock Tea Room and Shop.

At the moment locally sourced beef is on sale in our shop and we are currently focusing on building up our herd of Belted Galloway Cattle to ensure that a steady supply of home-reared beef will shortly be for sale. The Belted Galloway or 'Beltie' as affectionately known, has a double coat of hair and consequently doesn't have the layer of back fat that most other breeds need to keep them warm. This means that  'Beltie Beef' is famous for being lean and succulent.

Keep an eye on the web site to find out when we have 'Beltie Beef' for sale

There is no commercial stalking on the estate. All stalking is private and our roe deer population is carefully managed by our gamekeeper. Consequently we are able to offer delicious wild venison for sale in the shop when in season.

Lamb, home reared on our estate is currently for sale in our shop

Wild Salmon

Smoked SalmonStocks of salmon have been disappointingly low in recent years but we are still able to provide wild salmon for sale in our shop when in season - smoked and unsmoked. Perhaps our fish are even more delicious than most since they are caught by a unique and historic method of fishing that still takes place on the Nith and which dates back to the Viking era - Haaf Netting
